Herniated Disc

Herniated Discs

A herniated disc, also known as a slipped disc or disc herniation, is a medical condition that affects the intervertebral discs in the spine. The spine is composed of a series of bones called vertebrae, and between each pair of vertebrae, there are intervertebral discs that act as shock absorbers and provide cushioning.

A herniated disc occurs when the outer layer (annulus fibrosus) of an intervertebral disc becomes weakened or damaged, allowing the inner gel-like material (nucleus pulposus) to bulge or leak out. This can result in the disc pressing on nearby nerves or the spinal cord, leading to pain, discomfort, and various neurological symptoms.

Common symptoms of a herniated disc include:

Pain

This can vary depending on the location of the herniation. If the herniation compresses a nerve, it can cause sharp, shooting pain that radiates down the arm or leg. For example, a herniated disc in the lower back can lead to sciatica, which is characterized by pain radiating down the leg.

Numbness and Tingling

Compression of nerves can lead to numbness, tingling, or a “pins and needles” sensation in the areas served by those nerves.

Muscle Weakness

The affected nerve may also cause muscle weakness in the corresponding area. For example, weakness in the foot muscles in cases of lumbar herniation.

Whether you have been dealing with this for days or years, come consult with our physicians for answers. A detailed history, exam and any necessary imaging will be performed to determine the cause of your pain. We look forward to helping you!
