Whiplash

Whiplash

Whiplash is a common injury following rear-end automobile collisions and other types of traumas where there’s a sudden jerk or change in direction. It refers to neck injuries caused by a rapid back-and-forth motion of the neck, resembling the cracking of a whip.

Symptoms of Whiplash

Whiplash injuries may not appear immediately after the accident. Symptoms can develop hours, days, or even weeks later. They include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Decreased range of motion in the neck
  • Headaches, most often starting at the base of the skull.
  • Tenderness or pain in the shoulder, upper back, or arms
  • Tingling or numbness in the arms
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness

In some cases, people may experience:

  • Blurred vision
  • Ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Irritability
  • Difficulty concentrating

Diagnosis

To diagnose whiplash, at Champion Comprehensive Health Centers we will:

  • Take a detailed medical history.
  • Conduct a physical examination to determine the range of motion in the neck, the degree of motion that causes pain or discomfort, and check for tenderness over the neck.
  • Order imaging tests such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs in certain cases to rule out other injuries.
  • Come up with a custom treatment plan needed to fix your issue.
